Separating And Closing

I. Arms. - The patient sitting with arms extended. The operator, standing in front, grasps his wrists ; the patient moves his arms out and in, the operator resisting. It is used for expanding the chest. (Duplicated Active.) (See Fig. 72.)

II. Legs. - The patient sitting or half-lying. The operator grasps the ankles underneath, the patient separates and closes his legs, with the resistance of the operator, who may need an assistant. (Duplicated Active.) This movement acts upon different abdominal organs.

III. Knees. - The patient in a half-lying position, with the knees flexed. The operator, standing at his side, places one hand on each knee and resists the patient, who separates and closes his legs. Eight to sixteen times. (Duplicated Active.)
